Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
