Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
